Why innovation training is so important for your employees

What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail? Fear of failure can often get in the way of people testing out their creativity and innovation but these are the very skills that will be expected of us in the future as automation becomes a bigger part of the working world.

According to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor Report, four in 10 Irish people say that the fear of failure would prevent them from starting a business and less than half of people in Ireland believe they have the skills and knowledge to start a business. So, why is this relevant to employers?

The skills that are required to start a business are the same soft skills that forward-thinking organisations need in their employees. Innovation training should be considered a must-have for employers who are looking to ensure they retain their top talent.

Jane Gormley, director at RECRUITERS, believes many people misunderstand some of the key skills required in running a successful organisation. “It can be difficult to measure one’s own creative bravery because there is so often nothing to measure it against. The most successful leaders you know rarely copy an idea that’s been done before, so there’s no comparison.”

However, she added: “In recent years, confidence has certainly grown with entrepreneurial skillsets becoming more defined. Formal education around entrepreneurial skillsets is there to provide confidence to individuals so that they can do something new and original within a commercial, professional framework.”

With this in mind, Trinity College Dublin has launched a Level 9 (NFQ) postgraduate certificate in innovation and enterprise development through Tangent, Trinity’s Ideas Workspace, in partnership with RECRUITERS and Springboard+.

Essential training for your employees

With Trinity College Dublin’s programme, students will learn the fundamentals of creative thinking, idea development, opportunity generation and recognition, and venture planning in order to bring innovative products and services to market.

But this course isn’t just for those who want to start their own business. Those who take part will learn to be innovative and entrepreneurial in their approach to problem-solving and acquire a range of problem-solving and lateral thinking skills. These skills will be vital for all organisations and Gormley said it’s a great way for employers to upskill their employees and retain top talent.

“This course supports and encourages creative, innovative business minds. With cutting edge methodologies, students here will mix with other entrepreneurs from varied backgrounds and exercise their ability to turn their idea into a functioning business process,” said Gormley.

“The most progressive workplaces and companies are agile, disciplined and brave. The best businesses take calculated risks, with creative minds breaking into new areas, anticipating trends and constantly reworking the ‘why’ and the ‘how’ behind the running of the organisation,” she said.

“It’s crucially important that individuals within a business, particularly leaders and key decision-makers, don’t lose the ability to rework, reimagine and maintain modern, challenging approaches to what was once the norm. This certificate exercises how to fluidly encourage thinking, reasoning and communication within a team to manage product realisation.”

The programme will commence in September 2019 with the face-to-face sessions taking place in Cavan, Longford, Waterford and Tipperary town, with 20 spaces in each region. A fee of €300 applies to those in employment. To apply or for more information on the programme click here.
