We are the children of the tech revolution. It has a nice ring to it, don’t you think? And so it should, as an increase of American tech startups are flocking to the Emerald Isle. But why? Is it the low corporate tax regime? The influx of European and South-American tech graduates? The poetry? The Guinness? The weather? OK, it’s probably not the weather, but what is it that is attracting some of these companies to Ireland?
As you’ve probably noticed, our proud little island has become quite the IT hotspot. Let’s have a look at this year’s benchmarks.
Ireland’s economy is currently growing four and a half times faster than the EU average and a staggering 57,100 new jobs were created in the year to June. Happy days!
May of this year saw a record 13,445 professional jobs come to market, with a monthly rise of 18pc in the number of IT jobs.
The IT push was largely driven (70%) by the multinational and banking sector, with the surge containing a significant increase in permanent positions.
In June, there were more than 1,100 tech jobs announced in Ireland. Dublin landed the majority but there were also major announcements for other counties.
In July alone, more than 2,200 tech jobs were announced. So many jobs, so few people. This has welcomed oversea candidates coming from Eastern Europe, Southern America and other parts of the world with open arms.
The total number of jobs advertised in Ireland in Q2 of this year was up 17pc on 2014’s numbers.
And even Irish Minister for Finance Michael Noonan told Silicon Republic in his Spring statement that the jobs lost in Ireland during the recession will be totally recovered by 2018.
Is it time to say goodbye to the recession and hello to the boom? Or is it way too soon? Only time will tell.
